The League of Legends World Cup has broken the record for unique champions appearing as picks or bans in matches. When we have barely passed the equator of the group stage in these Worlds 2022, a total of 101 characters have had a presence in the tournament. However, there are heroes that have not benefited from this increase in alternatives and are still not appearing in competitive games. Specifically, there are a total of four who have never appeared in a world championship, and in two of those cases we are facing a particularly serious situation.

The worst champions in the history of professional League of Legends

After conducting a review and gathering information on all the champions that have been selected in all the world championships in the history of League of Legends, we have found a small group of three dissidents. The number is exactly the same as in the last edition of the tournament. However, there are important changes. Shaco was selected in the jungle for the matchup between T1 and DetonatioN FocusMe in the group stage last year. He was chosen by the Japanese who, although they were probably going to do it anyway, suffered a painful defeat and were not able to make the character shine.

Shaco is the last new champion chosen in worlds history (discounting the new characters debuting at Worlds 2022)

Also since last year we have received new characters and, in almost all cases, they have already been chosen in the tournament. It is the case of vex, Bel’Veth, renata either Nilah It only took a few days to debut. It is true that they are not the most popular characters in the competition, but they have specific niches in certain compositions that have allowed them to appear in the championship on some occasions. Akshan and Zeri, who are the other champions who debuted at these 2022 Worlds, have not had the same luck.

These are all the characters that have never appeared in the world championship…

  • Teacher Yi: Its competitive presence (appearance as a national team or ban) throughout history and taking into account only the elite leagues and major international competitions is 0.3% and almost all these games correspond to Season 8 and with the strategy of funnel. If it hasn’t appeared this year, which was very strong in SoloQ, it doesn’t look like it will until a rework arrives.
  • Illaoi: His historical presence in the highest level competitions is 0.9%, but he has never been lucky enough to have one of those games correspond to the World Cup. The last time it was played was in the LCK Summer 2020. It was played in six games, all thanks to a single team that finished last.
  • Zeri: It dominated the competitive since its launch and that has made it unplayable in these Worlds 2022. Riot Games reduced its power so much that it is almost impossible for us to see it. It is his first world championship and it will surely end up appearing in future editions.
  • akshan: Doesn’t seem like a very interesting character being a net lower attack damage alternative in mid lane to Yone or other champions. He is his first World Cup, so perhaps his situation will go back in the future…

Similarly, we have also been able collect somewhat more positive stats on other characters. For example, we now know that Nidalee and Lee Sin have been the only champions to appear in every Worlds played to date. This statistic, of course, has a bit of a catch. Many League of Legends champions were subsequently released and have had world championship participation ever since. This list would be made up of a total of 18 characters (those with two or fewer participations are not taken into account).

Bard (2015)

Braum (2014)

Camille (2017)

Gnar (2015)

Jayce (2012)

Jin (2016)

Lee Sin (2011)

Lilly (2020)

Lucian (2014)

Nidalee (2011)

Oriana (2012)

Orn (2018)

Rakan (2017)

Syndra (2013)

Tahm Kench (2015)

The year in which they had the opportunity to debut in the World Cup is shown in parentheses (which does not necessarily have to be the same as the year of their launch). A fact that gives us one last surprise, although not so remarkable. It seems obvious that the new League of Legends champions are getting better and better in competitive. On the one hand, this is due to the greater diversity of strategies available and having participated in a smaller number of World Cups, although it is also very likely that it is one of the great objectives of Riot Games when releasing a new hero.

worlds lol

Heimerdinger is one of the most underused champions in the history of competitive League of Legends, and of course, he hasn’t been selected frequently in the world championships either. However, with just two games he changed the history of the Worlds.
