A review for “advanced” Beachbody users (e.g. P90X2, Asylum grads), July 18, 2013

NOTE: This is a duplicate of the review I wrote for Shaun T’s FOCUS T25 DVD Workout

SECOND NOTE: I just finished my T25 program, and have updated the review at the bottom with my final impressions.
    _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

This review is mainly for the people who have completed some of the more “advanced” Beachbody programs, such as P90X2 and the Asylum series, are looking for a similar level of challenge, and are wondering if Focus T25 is the next exciting program that can further improve their fitness and athleticism. This review isn’t for people who are looking to use this program mainly for weight loss, or for really busy individuals who are attracted to the program primarily for the “25 minutes/day, 5 days/week” concept. To give you a little background, I started doing BB programs last January. Over the last 18 months or so I have done: 1) Insanity, 2) Asylum 1, 3) P90X2, 4) Asylum 2, 5) P90X2/Asylum 1&2 hybrid, 6) P90X, 7) Les Mills Combat, and now 8) Focus T25. I also do an occasional Brazil Butt Lift workout with my wife, who uses BBL as her main program (I still think that High & Tight using heavy resistance bands and ankle weights is the most intense BB workout available for your glutes, hamstrings, and adductors – even more than the leg workouts from P90X2 or Asylum!!). I am a 28-year-old male, 5’11”, and went from 180 lbs and 12% body fat to 162 lbs and 5% BF during that time, with massive increases in strength and conditioning. I haven’t done Body Beast (I’m not really into weightlifting for the sake of getting big; I aim for a more Ninja Warrior-esque physique than a bodybuilder physique), so I can’t comment on how T25 would compare to that program. My goal right now is to gain more athleticism, tone, and muscle strength (not to lose weight), and so I’ve been ignoring the 1600 calories/day nutrition plan (I eat 2100 – 2500 calories/day right now for maintenance).

So is T25 just as intense and effective as P90X2 or Asylum? I would say the short answer is No . . . IF you are following the program as written. As others have pointed out in their reviews, T25 workouts are divided up into phases: 5 weeks of Alpha phase “foundation” workouts, 5 weeks of Beta phase “core-focused” workouts, and an optional and separate 4 weeks of Gamma phase “strength” workouts. The program schedule calls for a single 25-minute workout on Monday – Thursday, a double workout on Friday, and rest/stretch days on Saturday and Sunday. A lot of people seem to get disappointed several days into the Alpha phase, and I was also one of them. The Alpha phase workouts are much easier than Asylum workouts (they are probably similar in intensity to Insanity), are a lot shorter, and frankly don’t provide me with the burn that I am looking for.

So instead of following the regular schedule, I have decided to do the following. For Week 1, I did the 1st week of Alpha phase to try out all the workouts, adding Gamma workouts in the evening on occasion. For Week 2, I did the 1st week of Beta phase, again adding Gamma workouts in the evening. For Weeks 3 – 6 (and possibly Weeks 7 – 10), I am currently doing double workouts 6 days a week (Monday – Saturday) with Stretch on Sunday, and it has been going great for me so far. I have basically been following the 4-week Gamma schedule and doing the assigned Gamma workout in the morning; in the evening I do an Alpha or Beta workout that works on a different aspect than the morning workout. For example, I did Gamma Rip’T Up (upper body strength) and Beta Dynamic Core (core) yesterday. Today I will be doing Gamma Extreme Circuit (upper body strength) and Alpha Lower Focus (legs). Tomorrow I will be doing Gamma Pyramid (total body strength) and Beta Core Speed (agility & cardio).

Following this schedule, I think I’m actually getting as good of a conditioning work as I did with Asylum … Actually, I feel like there are several advantages to this method compared to Asylum. First, Shaun T designed T25 to be gentler on your joints, and this is definitely noticeable. I remember every time I did Vertical Plyo and Overtime from Asylum 1, I was worried my form would collapse while trying to keep up and I would end up blowing out my knee or tearing my quads or something. Second, getting to split my workouts into two separate 25-minute sessions as opposed to a single 50-minute session allows me to push harder through the total 50 minutes without wearing myself out like I often did at the end of Asylum workouts (I’m looking at you, X Trainer!). Also for me personally, I think it’s actually easier to find two different times in the day to do 25-minute workouts (once in the morning…

Got the package much earlier than the estimated delivery date which was super sweet… not to mention that ShaunT is the greatest personal trainer who ever lived 🙂 the workouts are extremely hard but I like this cycle better than alpha and beta. I like the strength aspect. Its more focus and less bouncing around. Melts off body fat even when you aren’t following a strict diet regimen. I love the way shaun t explains the moves too. He is brilliant in his descriptions and analogies that help you to get your form right even without looking at the screen. Also comes with a hybrid plan mixing workouts from alpha and beta for when you finish gamma. everyone needs to finish off T25 with this program if you are serious about it. I did this workout post baby #2 and went from 189 to 150 (dress size 12 to size 6) in 3 months!! woo hoo!

Shaun T has this workout to a science . I have been a gym rat for five years ; working out every day for 75 to 90 min a day 6 days a week…. And gained a pound and lost a pound …. I truly did not believe I could change my body in 25 min in 10 weeks … Spend the money … Oh yeah I also had a personal trainer for 8 months and when I returned to the gym ; my trainer asked me what I was doing !!!!!!
